Mobile phone insurance – a complete guide

mobile phone insurance

Mobile phone insurance is mainly seen as an additional expense and something we can cut corners on when trying to save money. Yet mobiles are a huge part of everyday life, whether that’s for business, pleasure or just everyday family life, and so insuring it should be high on your insurance priority list. Especially when it can be done for as little as £6.99 a month!

So whether you’re able to keep your mobile looking brand new, seem to lose it all the time, or have a track record of having it pinched, there’s mobile insurance that’s right for you and is available to everyone.

What does mobile insurance cover?

Insurers give different levels of mobile insurance so check the detail and make sure it’s covering you for your needs. Some policies cover you if your mobile is lost or stolen and then some only if it’s stolen, so double-check. Also check if it covers liquid spills, although a lot of the new mobiles are somewhat splash-proof so this isn’t always necessary.

There have been reports of some insurers refusing to payout when mobile have been taken from pockets, stating that the phones need to be kept in a secure place, or closed pocket, again a quick check with your insurer will clear this matter up. Below is a list of scenarios when insurers have been known not to payout.

  • If you have a virus on your phone, insurers won’t cover data, contacts, downloads or photographs. To help with this we advise installing an anti-virus app such as Avast Mobile Security for Android or Apple phones. These apps can usually be found for FREE so there’s no excuse! Also, make sure you back your phone up too.
  • If you’ve lost the receipt for your mobile phone
  • If you weren’t showing the appropriate care when your mobile was lost or stolen. For example, if you left your phone on a bar table and left it unattended.
  • In the first 14 or 21 days of your new mobile insurance policy
  • If it gets damaged when trying to modify your mobile phone
  • If you left it unattended in your car when it was taken
  • If the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number has been altered on your mobile or you can’t supply one when taking out your policy
  • Be aware that the cost of unauthorised calls won’t be covered. So if someone pinches your mobile and then makes calls, the cost of these calls won’t be paid back to you.

Insure your phone within 6 months of purchasing it

Many phone insurance companies won’t offer policies to customers who have mobile phones older than 6 months. So as soon as you purchase it, start looking and get the right policy for you. Older phones may have to be covered by your home contents insurance, but do be aware that any claims will mean you lose your no claims discount, and your premiums may go up.

Check with your bank first as you may already have mobile insurance

Many bank accounts have built-in benefits, such as travel insurance, and some even have mobile phone insurance. So before you look for a policy, check with your bank and see if it’s included in your account. If it is then great, but do please check what it covers to make sure you get the right cover for you.

Check with your network provider as they also tend to offer mobile insurance

It may be worth checking with your network provider too. They often have their own insurance policies which benefit from speedy replacements should you need it, yet these tend to be far more expensive so if you can wait little for a replacement then it’s best to shop around.
